Hermitage of Holy Virgin the Merciful

One of the most interesting and unique features of the area are the rock paintings and hermitages on the steep shores of Prespa , marks the strong presence of small monastic communities and hermits. The virgin Eleousa(Merciful) (1373) and the virgin "Blachernitissa" (1455/6) are the most typical examples of rocks paintings , which can be seen through the boat in the small bay of Fishermen .

Even more impressive are the three best preserved hermitages in the cliff that rises above the lakeshore. The first of the two two that meets the visitor in his tour by boat is the hermitage of the Transfiguration(13th C) .From which survived the small roomed vaulted church and some traces of the monk's cells. Then one can see the ruins of little Ascension (15th C) from the sanctuary, which some elements are preserved frescoes of the apse of the  sanctuary.

The best preserved is te hermitage of the Virgin Eleousa (early 15th C) .Located in a cave with a relatively large opening. The small -nave church with a semi-hexagonal apse is bejeweled with frescoes, the most characteristic of the Mary holding the baby inthe arch over the entrance. The inscription above the little door informs up for monk-founders of the church the prince of Voulkasino area and the exact date of construction(1409-1410).
