From the Beneventum of the Romans to the prosperity of the 19th century and the thriving cooperatives of today, Velvento’s long history has always been closely tied to the agricultural wealth of its fertile land.
The story of Velvento is reflected even in its name, which has appeared in various forms over the centuries—Velvento, Velvendos, and Vilvinao. While several theories have been proposed about its origin, the most widely accepted links it to the Roman Beneventum in Italy, suggesting a connection with settlers who may have arrived in the area following the Roman conquest. Yet the history of the region stretches far beyond Roman times, with evidence of human presence dating back to prehistoric times. Velvento flourished during the Roman and early Byzantine periods, a legacy still traced today through important archaeological remains at Paliochora, Gratsiani, Brava, Vasilara Rachi, and Palaiokastro. Across the landscape, churches dating from the 15th to the 19th century stand as enduring witnesses of continuity—reflecting not only faith, but also the long-standing presence of active communities through time.

A decisive milestone followed in 1977 with the establishment of the first agricultural cooperative, opening the way for a long tradition of collaboration and export activity. Since then, Velvento’s cooperatives have stood out as a model of organisation and development across Greece.

Personalities who left their mark
The history of Velvento is closely intertwined with a number of personalities who left a lasting mark on its identity. Among them are the 19th-century scholar Charisios Papamarkou, a figure of learning and intellectual contribution; Zinas Papanastasiou, a major benefactor of local schools who supported education in the region; Stamkos Klingos, a martyr of the National Resistance who was executed during the German occupation; and Hippokratis Papageorgiou, an important local physician remembered for his service to the community. The region is also known as the birthplace of the legendary Alexis Zorbas (Giorgos Zorbas), a vivid folk personality whose life and character went on to inspire Nikos Kazantzakis’ renowned The Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas.
