Lazarines

Each year, on Lazarus Saturday, one of the region’s most cherished springtime traditions comes to life. The Lazarines—young girls and women dressed in beautifully embroidered traditional costumes, often passed down through generations—walk through the village streets, visiting homes with songs and graceful dances that welcome the arrival of spring. The custom traces its origins to ancient springtime celebrations, later becoming associated with the Christian feast of Lazarus. Interestingly, the songs themselves rarely refer to Lazarus; instead, they speak of love, migration, youth, and everyday life. Together with the elegant dances of the Lazarines, they create a celebration that marks the renewal of both nature and the community.

Where to experience it: The custom is revived in Livadero and Mikrovalto.
