Lazarines
A springtime custom with deep historical roots comes to life every Lazarus Saturday. The Lazarines —young girls and women— dress in traditional costumes, once adorned by their mothers, and go from house to house singing and dancing. The custom originates in ancient carols of the spring New Year, later associated with the Christian feast of Lazarus. Interestingly, the lyrics of Lazarine songs do not refer to Lazarus; they refer to love, migration, and life, while their graceful and light-footed dances bring the spirit of spring to every neighbourhood they visit.
Where to experience it: The custom is revived in Livadero and Mikrovalto of Servia.
