Florina Regional Unit

The Regional Unit of Florina is a distinctive four-season destination where nature, culture, and gastronomy come together to offer authentic travel experiences. Bordering North Macedonia and Albania, the region is shaped by a dramatic landscape in which mountains, rolling hills, and fertile plains intertwine to create scenery of remarkable beauty and character.

Here, a landscape of remarkable natural harmony unfolds, where mountain ranges meet forests and open landscapes, creating the perfect setting for wandering, exploration, and a deeper connection with nature. At the heart of this landscape lies Prespa National Park, a place of exceptional ecological significance and home to rare species of flora and fauna, where you can experience nature in its purest form.

Water is a defining element throughout the region. Six natural lakes — Vegoritida, Petron, Zazari, Cheimaditida, Great and Little Prespa — shape the landscape, offering serene scenery of exceptional beauty. Around their shores, lakeside villages and traditional stone-built settlements preserve traces of a rich past, inviting you to step back in time.

Water is also a defining element of the city of Florina, which is crossed by the Sakoulevas River. Its presence shapes the city’s distinctive character, as well as that of the wider region, giving rise to the atmospheric landscapes captured in the films of Theo Angelopoulos.

Florina also stands out for its distinctive gastronomic identity, deeply rooted in agricultural tradition and shaped by its unique natural environment. It is home to Greece’s highest-altitude wine-producing zone, with Amyntaio recognised as one of the country’s leading wine regions, producing wines of distinctive character shaped by the local climate and soil. At the same time, the famous Florina red peppers and high-quality legumes — most notably the Prespa beans — reflect the richness of the region’s fertile soils, favourable microclimate, and abundant waters, creating an authentic culinary experience.

With its rich natural environment, abundant waters, traditional products, and vibrant cultural identity, Florina offers a truly complete and distinctive experience — one that lingers long in the memory.
