Kastoria Regional Unit

At the western edge of Macedonia lies the Regional Unit of Kastoria, a destination where the beauty of nature meets a rich historical legacy and a vibrant cultural life. Amphitheatrically built around its shimmering lake, the city of Kastoria is one of Greece’s most important centres of Byzantine heritage. As you wander through its streets, dozens of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, adorned with remarkable frescoes, reveal the city’s rich spiritual and artistic legacy.This legacy is complemented by the imposing mansions of the historic Doltso and Apozari neighbourhoods, which stand as enduring symbols of the prosperity brought by the city’s long-standing fur trade. Further north and west, Mount Grammos and the area around Nestorio reveal one of Greece’s wildest and most authentic mountain landscapes.
