Church of Agios Nikolaos Tzotzas

In Apozari, you will come across the Church of Saint Nicholas Tzotzas, a small yet remarkable Byzantine church. It belongs to the type of a single-nave, timber-roofed basilica with a later added narthex, and its interior is decorated with frescoes dating to the second half of the 14th century. In the surviving sections of the wall paintings, you can discern the arrangement of themes and individual figures, a compositional scheme that gradually became established in the decoration of single-nave churches as early as the Komnenian period. Observing the church’s compositions, you will notice their simple structural design and the dense arrangement of figures, through which symmetry and balance among the individual groups of the composition are carefully achieved.
