Boucharia – Nochtaria of Servia
Hidden in a quiet corner of the Grevena–Kozani Geopark, near Mikrovvalto, lies one of Greece’s most extraordinary, almost otherworldly landscapes: Boucharia and Nochtaria. The natural setting –often compared to a smaller Cappadocia– feels almost unreal, and it draws visitors with its rare, almost poetic beauty. Boucharia are impressive from the very first moment. Towering, reddish, and slightly conical structures stand firmly in the landscape, like stone sculptures shaped by time itself. Their story begins around 70,000 years ago, when continuous erosion started carving the terrain, gradually revealing and shaping these remarkable natural formations that seem to defy both time and gravity. At their top, a layer of schist acts as a natural “umbrella”, protecting the core from erosion and giving them their distinctive shape, reminiscent of giant stone mushrooms — or “chimneys” as local tradition calls them. Not far away, Nochtaria complete the scene with their own striking presence. Slender, cone-shaped formations rise from the ground, ending in sharper peaks that resemble natural towers sculpted by wind and time. With their imposing appearance, Boucharia and Nochtaria stand as a testament to the power of nature, offering you some of the most unforgettable images you will ever encounter.
