Holy Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Aiani

Standing in the central square of Aiani, the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos (also known as Panagia of Aiani) is among the most important Byzantine monuments in the region. It dates to the 11th–12th century and originally functioned as the katholikon of a monastery. Despite several interventions during the post-Byzantine period, it still preserves elements of its original form, such as old frescoes and sculptural features. Its iconographic decoration spanned over different periods, from the 16th to the 19th century, created by renowned iconographers. The iconostasis, constructed during various eras, reflects the evolution of artistic styles over time. Today, the church remains closed to the public; however, you have the opportunity to admire its interior each year on August 15, when it opens for the celebration of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, attracting a large number of faithful. Its icons and relics are preserved in the Collection of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Antiquities at the Archaeological Museum of Aiani.
