Livestock Festival in Samarina
One of the region’s important traditional events honouring Agios Mamas, the patron saint of shepherds, is the Livestock Festival in Samarina. It takes place every year in early September at the location of Chelimodi, near the chapel of Agios Mamas, approximately 10 kilometres away from the village. It is an opportunity to attend an authentic mountainous festival within the natural landscape of the Pindus and experience a tradition deeply rooted in the local community. Residents gather to honour their patron saint, meet one another and celebrate, while the setting is completed by the distinctive atmosphere of Samarina, the highest village in Greece.
