Lake Ilarionas
In the heart of West Macedonia, the artificial Lake Ilariona stretches impressively across the Aliakmonas River valley, creating a striking landscape that extends from the southeastern edge of the Grevena Regional Unit to the historic area of Aiani in Kozani. Its creation is linked to the Ilariona Dam, a major infrastructure project that serves hydroelectric power generation, water supply for Thessaloniki, and irrigation of the fertile plains stretching from Imathia and Pella to Thessaloniki. The lake has shaped a landscape of remarkable scale and beauty. From above, you can admire a captivating network of fjord-like formations and successive water basins, interrupted by dense vegetation, while historic monasteries emerge scattered all throughout the landscape, adding a sense of serenity to this dreamlike setting, where the grandeur of nature seems to embrace every corner of the land.
