Lake Ilarionas

In the heart of West Macedonia, the artificial Lake Ilarionas stretches impressively across the valley of the Aliakmonas River, creating a remarkable landscape that extends from the southeastern edge of the Grevena Regional Unit to the historic area of Aiani in Kozani. Its creation is closely linked to the Ilarionas Dam, a major infrastructure project developed for hydroelectric power generation, the water supply of Thessaloniki, and the irrigation of the fertile plains extending from Imathia and Pella to Thessaloniki. Today, the lake has transformed the valley into a landscape of exceptional scale and beauty. From above, you will be captivated by a network of fjord-like inlets and successive water basins unfolding among dense vegetation, while historic monasteries emerge throughout the scenery, adding a sense of tranquillity to this dreamlike setting where the grandeur of nature embraces every corner of the land.
