Archaeological Site of Diocletianopolis

Just a short distance from the Archaeological Museum of Argos Orestiko, near the modern village of Armenochori, lie the remains of Diocletianopolis, a fortified city believed to have been founded by the Roman Emperor Diocletian (AD 284–305). As you take a walk through the site, the history of a place that once held great strategic importance vividly comes alive. Its times of prosperity are being reflected in the impressive fortification walls, extending for 2,700 meters around it. Significant parts of the fortifications have been restored, while the remains of religious and secular buildings dating from the 4th and 5th centuries complete the picture of this important Roman city, which was gradually abandoned in the wake of the barbarian invasions.
