Argoutsaria of Kleisoura
New Year’s Day in Kleisoura is marked by the Argkoutsiaria, a centuries-old tradition that lies at the heart of the festive celebrations. Rooted in the folk customs of the Twelve Days of Christmas, the ritual is believed to bring good luck, prosperity, and abundance for the coming year. Men of the community disguise themselves with animal masks and costumes, dancing through the streets, and stirring the village to life. Gkegas, Kokona, Tserkezos, along with the group of the Argoutsaria, take center stage in a theatrical performance full of passion and humor, which culminates in the square with crossed bayonets, paired dances, and wishes for a happy new year. The celebration continues in cafés and homes, featuring tsipouro, songs, and local delicacies.
