Byzantine Museum of Kastoria
Located at Dexamenis Square, the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria is one of the most important museums of Byzantine icons in Greece. More than a collection of exceptional works of art, it offers a carefully curated introduction to the city’s long-standing role as a major centre of Byzantine and post-Byzantine artistic creation. Through its three sections—Byzantine Kastoria, Post-Byzantine Kastoria, and Post-Byzantine artistic workshops—you will follow the evolution of icon painting, from early portable icons to the refined creations of later workshops. Among the exhibits, you will discover processional and despotic icons, epistyles, iconostasis doors, selected detached wall paintings, coins, and jewellery, each revealing aspects of the artistic and social life of their time. What makes the experience even more special is that many of these icons come from the churches of Kastoria’s historic centre themselves, making the museum the perfect first stop before exploring the city’s cobbled streets and remarkable Byzantine churches.
