Cave Church of Agios Georgios in Akrini
The cave church of Agios Georgios in Akrini is one of the most distinctive religious monuments in the area and is certainly worth a close visit. Set within a natural cave, it creates an atmosphere that blends the serenity of nature with the deep spirituality of the place. The chapel dates back to the period of Ottoman rule and, according to tradition, the local Turks not only respected it but also believed in the miracles of Saint George. When they departed in 1923, it is said that they requested that it not be destroyed. Legend also states that believers heard heavenly chants and unnatural sounds within the site. The cave church celebrates both on the feast day of Saint George and on the occasion of the Ascension, attracting numerous faithful from across the region. A short distance below the church, you will also find the newer shrine of Saint George, created in the 1980s by Paraskevas Tsaousidis on the site of an older one.
