Church of Agios Athanasios Mouzakis

If you wish to explore a representative monument of the 14th century, built during a particularly pivotal period in Kastoria’s history, head toward the Metropolis district. There you will find the Church of Saint Athanasios Mouzaki. At the time of its construction, the region was no longer under Byzantine control, with authority passing successively to local rulers until around 1387, when the Albanian-origin Mouzakis family assumed control of the city from the Serbs. The small and austere church –single-aisled, with a semicircular apse and a simple later narthex on the west– features interior wall paintings of the 14th century, in accord with the artistic models of the era.
