Church of Agios Athanasios Mouzakis

If you wish to discover a characteristic monument of the 14th century, built during one of the most turbulent periods in Kastoria’s history, head to the Mitropoleos district. There stands the Church of Agios Athanasios Mouzakis. At the time of its construction, the region was no longer under Byzantine control, with authority passing successively to local rulers until around 1387, when the Albanian-origin Mouzakis family assumed control of the city from the Serbs. It is a small single-nave church with a semicircular sanctuary apse and a later narthex on the western side. Inside, you can admire 14th-century frescoes that offer a fascinating glimpse into the artistic spirit of the era.
