Church of Agios Georgios in Omorfokklisia
A 20-kilometre journey from Kastoria leads you to the Church of Agios Georgios in Omorfokklisia, a monument of harmony, refinement, and understated beauty. Originally built in the 12th century as a cross-in-square church with a narthex, it was later enlarged with a spacious narthex that incorporated an independent spire and portico with chapels on the north and south sides. Restoration efforts on the church, once the katholikon of a monastery, brought to light fragments of its original frescoes, which you can admire alongside the remarkable 13th-century paintings preserved in the later narthex. Particularly striking is the full-length wooden relief of Agios Georgios (Saint George), believed to possess miraculous powers. Dating to the late 13th century, this remarkable work of art is closely linked to a deeply rooted local tradition: according to popular belief, if you press a coin against it while making a wish and the coin remains attached instead of falling, your wish will come true. It is worth giving it a try.
