Church of Agios Minas in Emporio

A landmark for the whole West Macedonia, the Church of Agios Minas is one of the most important religious and historical monuments in the region. Dedicated to Agios Minas, patron saint of Emporio in Eordaia, it was built between 1921 and 1924 on the foundations of an earlier church. It is a three-aisled basilica with a pitched roof and an impressive carved wooden iconostasis, with the holy relic of Saint Minas preserved inside, on the south-west side of the main nave. Particularly noteworthy is the iconostasis, crafted in India, as well as the frescoes by folk painters from Kleisoura. The church also houses icons dating from the 16th to the 20th century, including portable relics brought by refugees from Argyroupoli in Pontus. The wider architectural complex is completed by two distinctive structures: the Church of Agia Sophia, a faithful replica of the famous monument in Constantinople, and the impressive Galata Tower. The Church of Agia Sophia, smaller in scale, is a domed three-aisled basilica entirely decorated with mosaics reproducing, with remarkable accuracy, the original compositions of Hagia Sophia. The Galata Tower, built at a 1:3 scale of the original, today functions as a treasury museum, hosting on each floor valuable objects and offerings from residents and the Church, ranging from agricultural tools to liturgical items— composing a tapestry that connects faith, history, and collective memory.
