Church of Agios Nikolaos Kasnitzis
One of the finest examples of Byzantine art in Kastoria can be found at Omonia Square: the Church of Agios Nikolaos Kasnitzis. Built in the 12th century, this modest single-aisled basilica with a narthex stands out for its ceramic decoration, architectural grace, and exceptional frescoes that form a unified artistic composition. Observing them, you will surely realise just how important a centre of arts and culture Kastoria once was within Macedonia. In the apse of the sanctuary dominates the Platytera, while the walls depict scenes from the life of Christ and Agios Nikolaos. Look more closely at the narthex and you will notice a particularly interesting representation: the founder of the church, Nikephoros Kasnitzis, together with his wife Anna, is offering the effigy of the church to the patron saint.
