Church of Agios Nikolaos of Nun Efpraxia
Hidden within the historic heart of Kastoria, the Church of Agios Nikolaos of Nun Efpraxia is a small yet remarkable monument of the late Byzantine period. This single-aisled, timber-roofed basilica, with a later narthex added along its southern and western sides, owes much of its present appearance to a renovation carried out in 1486. As a surviving inscription reveals, the works and the church’s frescoes were funded by Nun Efpraxia, whose donation reflects the important religious and spiritual role the church played at the time. Inside, take a moment to admire the surviving frescoes on the eastern, northern, and southern walls. Dating from the late 15th century, they stand out for both their exceptional artistic quality and their rare iconography.
