Church of Agios Nikolaos
On the western shore of Prespa, near the village of Pyli, stands the Church of Agios Nikolaos, one of the region’s most intriguing monuments. It is a triconch cruciform inscribed church, dating to the 14th century, and is distinguished by its rich brickwork decoration on the exterior façades. Until the mid-20th century, much of its upper structure and dome were still preserved; the dome likely collapsed during the period of Italian occupation. Inside, fragments of frescoes survive, including figures of military saints and part of an angel, dating to after the mid-14th century. Although no longer intact, the church remains deeply evocative, standing in silence within the peaceful landscape that surrounds it.
