Church of Prophet Elias

In Palaiogratsano, you come across one of the area’s most significant religious and historical landmarks—the Church of Prophet Elias. Built in 1549 in the presence of the hieromonk Makarios, it originally formed part of a monastic complex established by monks from the Holy Trinity Monastery. The church is adorned with remarkable frescoes created by the hieromonk Theodosios, the monk Dimitrios, and the lay artist Nemas, reflecting the artistic spirit of the period. Every year on 20 July, pilgrims and visitors gather here to honour Prophet Elias, before joining the traditional festival that follows. Visiting at this time offers a wonderful opportunity to experience one of the area’s longest-standing celebrations.
