Hermitage of Panagia Eleousa

At the highest point of a dramatic cave overlooking Great Prespa stands the Hermitage of Panagia Eleousa. This small, single-aisled, barrel-vaulted chapel, accessed via 70 stone steps carved into the rock, features a rich painted imitation of ceramic decoration on its façades, while inside it preserves exceptionally well-preserved frescoes dating to 1409–1410. On the western gable, the Virgin Vrefokratousa dominates, painted within a blind arch, while traces of the hermits’ cells survive around the church. Its dramatic location, breathtaking views, and profound sense of serenity make it one of the most mystical sites of the lake.
