Holy Monastery of Agios Athanasios in Eratyra
The Holy Monastery of Agios Athanasios in Eratyra is one of the most important historical and spiritual centres of the Voio region, with origins dating back to the Byzantine era. Founded before 1600, the monastery reached its peak during the 18th century, when it experienced remarkable spiritual and artistic flourishing. It housed a rich library and fostered a community of learned monks devoted to music, icon painting, and the preservation of valuable manuscripts, contributing significantly to the spread of education and Orthodox tradition throughout the region. In 1794, however, the monastery suffered a devastating fire that led to its near-total destruction. Its reconstruction began in 1797, as attested by an inscription on the western wall of the katholikon, although it never fully regained its former splendour. While the church no longer preserves significant frescoes, it stands out for its remarkable carved wooden decoration, above all its imposing iconostasis, which extends across the entire height and width of the nave. Today, the monastery remains active, albeit with a smaller monastic community, welcoming pilgrims and visitors who come to discover its long history and enduring spiritual legacy.
