Holy Monastery of Panagia Porfyra

At the southeastern edge of Agios Achilleios, hidden within the island’s stillness, lies the Monastery of Panagia Porfyra—one of the most mysterious and moving monuments of Prespa. Only a few remains survive from the monastery’s former life, including the restored single-aisled katholikon with its later-added narthex, as well as traces of monastic cells and auxiliary spaces. The frescoes on the western wall of the main church date back to 1524, while in 1741 the narthex was decorated by the brother painters Konstantinos and Athanasios from Korçë, reflecting two distinct periods of faith and artistic expression. A visit to the monastery is not merely a stop on an itinerary; it is an almost contemplative experience that stays with you for a long time.
