Holy Monastery of the Archangels (Taxiarchon) of Tsouka
Above Stenopotamos, 1.5 km west of the settlement of Agia Anna, the Monastery of Tsouka tells the vast history of Nestorio in a single visit. Stone-built and perched on the edge of a rocky outcrop overlooking wild gorges; it stands among the most historically significant monasteries in the region. From the 13th century, when it received donations from the Palaiologos dynasty that contributed to its decoration, until the Ottoman period, the monastery served as an important spiritual refuge and a key point of reference for local inhabitants. In March 1943, however, the darkest chapter in its history was written, as German occupation forces set fire to the monastery, destroying much of the complex. Since 1961, the now-abandoned monastery has been designated as a listed historic monument, silently narrating the region’s history to passing travellers.
