Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Dryovouno
Built in the 13th century on the foothills of Mount Askio, the Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos served for centuries as a centre of monastic life and spiritual influence. Around 1775, Agios Kosmas of Aetolia visited the monastery during his missionary journey through West Macedonia. Its last known abbot was the hieromonk Dionysios of Siatista, renowned for his ascetic life and his dedication to educating young people in secret schools during the Ottoman period. The monastery is inextricably linked to his life and martyrdom. In 1830, Dionysios fell victim to the Ottomans, who subjected him to severe torture before hanging him. Despite the destruction and looting it suffered during successive conflicts, the monastery’s katholikon and part of its frescoes survived until the end of the Second World War, preserving valuable testimony to its historical and spiritual legacy. The restoration of the monastery, initiated in the 1940s by Father Stefanos Tsantiris under the guidance of Metropolitan Antonios of Sisani and Siatista, marked the rebirth of this sacred place. Today, the monastery continues to welcome pilgrims and visitors alike, preserving a centuries-old spiritual tradition that remains deeply rooted in the life of the region.
