Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Kleisoura
The Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is located in a lush valley on the northeastern foothills of Mount Moriki at an altitude of 970 meters, offering magnificent views of nature’s backdrop. It lies about 35 kilometers from Kastoria, near the border with the Florina Regional Unit. Founded on the ruins of an older church by Hieromonk Isaiah Pistas of Kleisoura, a monk of the Monastery of Iviron on Mount Athos, it stands today as a living monument of spiritual and cultural heritage. Its katholikon is a three-aisled basilica with a dome, notable for its rich interior decoration. As you enter, you will be impressed by 1813-dated frescoes by Georgios from Chionades in Epirus, featuring rare iconography inspired by the Creation of the World. Slightly further on, the carved and gilded iconostasis,crafted in 1772 by Konstantinos Linotopitis,stands out as an outstanding example of ecclesiastical art of the period. Throughout its operation, the monastery played an important role in national struggles, sheltering fighters during the Greek War of Independence of 1821 and the Macedonian Struggle, and later offering refuge to locals of surrounding areas during World War II and the Greek Civil War. In the early 1990s, it became a convent and today hosts a small sisterhood, continuing its uninterrupted monastic tradition. It is closely associated with Saint Sophia of Kleisoura, a modern ascetic who lived there from 1927 to 1974 and was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2011. Every year on May 6, crowds of faithful gather to honor her memory.
