Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Kleisoura
The Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary lies in a lush valley on the northeastern foothills of Mount Moriki, at an altitude of 970 metres, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Located about 35 kilometres from Kastoria, on the border between the Regional Units of Kastoria and Florina, it is a place where natural beauty and centuries of spiritual tradition come together. The monastery was founded on the ruins of an earlier church by Hieromonk Isaiah Pistas, a monk of the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos. Its katholikon, a three-aisled basilica with a dome, impresses with its rich artistic decoration. As you step inside, you will discover frescoes dating from 1813, created by Georgios from Chionades in Epirus, whose rare iconography includes remarkable scenes inspired by the Creation of the World. Nearby, the finely carved and gilded iconostasis, crafted in 1772 by Konstantinos Linotopitis, stands as an exceptional example of the ecclesiastical art of its time.
Throughout its long history, the monastery has been closely connected with the struggles and hardships of the region, offering shelter to fighters during the Greek War of Independence of 1821 and the Macedonian Struggle, and later providing refuge to local inhabitants during World War II and the Greek Civil War. In the early 1990s, it was converted into a women’s monastic community, and today it continues its monastic tradition with a small sisterhood. The monastery is also closely associated with Agia Sophia of Kleisoura, a modern ascetic who lived there from 1927 to 1974 and was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2011. Every year on May 6, the monastery welcomes a large number of pilgrims who gather to honour her memory, keeping alive the spiritual legacy of a place that continues to inspire devotion.
