Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Dryovouno
The Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Dryovouno is the oldest continuously operating monastery in the Regional Unit of Kozani. Built in 1592, it is adorned with frescoes from 1652 and 1805 and is considered a model of post-Byzantine architecture. It became known for the visit of Agios Kosmas of Aetolia, who is said to have healed ill monks with holy water from a nearby spring, at the site of which a chapel dedicated to his memory still stands to this day. During times of struggle, the monastery served as a refuge for fighters and hosted figures such as Pavlos Melas, Dimitrios Feraios—the brother of Rigas Feraios—and Kapetan Vardas. Although it was burned to the ground by Italian forces in 1943, it was restored in 1996 and today functions as an active monastic centre with a permanent brotherhood.
