Holy Trinity Monastery in Pisoderi
Set within the forest, about 4 km outside Pisoderi, stands the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, one of the most significant monuments of Prespa’s modern history. The katholikon is a single-aisled, timber-roofed church with a narthex and a dome. According to tradition, it dates to 1050, as indicated by an inscribed stone plaque above the western entrance, although more recent research places its construction much later, in the 18th century. What is certain, however, is the monastery’s considerable historical importance over the centuries. Between 1850 and 1870 it functioned as an ecclesiastical school, and in 1867 the New Filiki Etaireia was founded here, contributing to the preparation of the Macedonian Struggle (1903–1908). During that period, the monastery served as a base for armed groups before being burned down in 1905 by komitadjis. Today, the katholikon, the remains of the monastic cells and bell tower, as well as part of the entrance gate, preserve the memory of a place that stood at the crossroads of faith, education, and the struggle for freedom.
