Klidonas

Every June, the village of Filotas comes alive in the glow of fires and the laughter of young women whispering wishes into the “silent water”. Here, you can experience Klidonas, a traditional custom honouring Saint John the Baptist and one of the most vibrant summer celebrations in the Municipality of Amyntaio. Rooted in ancient beliefs, the custom revolves around love, divination, and purification, preserving symbols and practices that have been passed down through generations. As part of the custom, unmarried girls place small personal objects into an earthen vessel filled with water, believing that the saint will reveal signs of their future during the night. At the same time, young men light fires and jump over the flames three times for good luck, a gesture believed to keep away evil spirits and welcome the light of summer.
