Kolinta Bampo
As Christmas approaches, on 23 December, the villages of Amyntaio are illuminated by the glow of large fires, marking the arrival of Kolinta Bampo — one of the region’s oldest winter traditions. Still practised mainly in Macedonia, this ancient Balkan custom transforms the flames into a symbol of protection, renewal, and celebration. According to tradition, its roots reach back to the Roman celebration of the winter solstice, when fires were lit to ward off evil spirits and welcome the new year. Over time, the custom gained a Christian meaning, with the flames symbolising the fire lit by shepherds to keep the newborn Christ warm.
