Kourbani
The Kourbani is a long-standing religious and communal tradition found across Macedonia, Thrace, and other parts of the Balkans. Rooted in the ceremonial offering of an animal, it is celebrated on important feast days and remains one of the region’s most enduring expressions of collective faith and community life. Following the blessing by the priest, the meat—typically beef, lamb, or goat—is slowly cooked in large cauldrons and shared with everyone attending the celebration, while traditional music accompanies the festivities. Organised through contributions and donations from the local community, the Kourbani is more than a festive gathering; it is a tradition that expresses gratitude, generosity, and the strong bonds that unite the community.
Where to experience it: The custom is revived in Trigoniko and Platanorrema.
