Loukanikofagia (Sausage Festival)

On 18 January, the feast day of Saint Athanasios, Velvento celebrates one of its most distinctive and much-loved traditions: the Loukanikofagia. The town comes together over generous portions of sausages, local wine, and traditional dishes prepared by local butchers following age-old recipes. Rooted in the time of the winter pig-slaughtering season, when families would gather to taste the freshly made sausages of the year, the tradition has evolved into a lively community celebration. Today, it continues to thrive, drawing more and more people each year who come to share in its warm, festive, and deeply local spirit.
