Nikeios School – Nymfaio
One of the most imposing buildings in Nymfaio, the Nikeios School stands above the village like a beacon of knowledge and memory. This three-storey stone building, distinguished by its tower and clock, was erected in 1928 thanks to a donation by Ioannis Zan Nikos, a native of Nymfaio who brought the architectural plans from Sweden, combining Macedonian stone with Scandinavian simplicity. Generations of students passed through its classrooms: the building housed the Lower Secondary School until 1941 and the Primary School until 1980. As Nymfaio’s population began to decline, the school fell silent — until 1986, when a group of residents set out to breathe new life into the village, beginning with the restoration of the Nikeios School. In collaboration with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the building was restored and transformed into a model conference centre before taking on its current, significant role. Since 1993, it has housed the ARCTUROS Information Centre, founded on the initiative of Yiannis Boutaris, where visitors can learn about the brown bear, a protected species that inhabits the mountains of the region.
