Open-Air Museum of the Neolithic Lakeside Settlement of Dispilio

Just 7 kilometers from the city of Kastoria, on the lake’s southern shore, lies one of the area’s most fascinating attractions: the Dispilio Open-Air Museum. Through a thoughtfully recreated setting, the museum offers visitors a chance to step back in time and discover what life was like in a Neolithic lakeside settlement around 7,500 years ago. The reconstruction is based on the accidental discovery of one of Europe’s oldest and most significant prehistoric lakeside settlements in 1932, as well as on the findings uncovered during the extensive archaeological excavations later carried out by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. As you explore the site, you will encounter replicas of remarkable artifacts, including three bone flutes and a wooden tablet engraved with linear symbols – an object widely regarded as one of the earliest known examples of written communication. A visit to Dispilio is especially rewarding for families and children, offering an engaging journey into the distant past and a unique glimpse into the beginnings of organized human settlement.
