Paleontological Collection of Siatista
The historic Trampantzeio Gymnasium hosts one of the most important paleontological collections in Greece, the Paleontological Collection of Siatista. It features mammoth fossils, rhinoceroses, rocks, and minerals that reflect the geological memory of the region. During your visit, you will notice the most emblematic exhibit of the collection: the skull of a prehistoric elephant with its tusks intact, approximately 125,000 years old, discovered in 2006 in Kaloneri. From the first tusk found in 1902 in the Aliakmonas Valley to the present day, the collection extends to mammoth bones, rhinoceros jaws, and fossils of horses, deer, and cattle. These findings span an impressive chronological range, turning the visit into a journey deep into prehistoric time and the natural history of the region.
