Reenactment of the Descent from the Cross
One of the most moving and distinctive Easter traditions in West Macedonia comes to life every Good Friday in Dryovouno through the Reenactment of the Descent from the Cross. If you happen to be in Dryovouno on this day,you will witness a deeply symbolic ceremony that begins after the Service of the Great Hours at the Church of Agios Minas, from where a solemn procession of clergy and faithful makes its way through the village. Accompanied by mournful funeral marches, the procession heads towards the so-called “Hill of Golgotha”, beside the Holy Monastery of Agios Longinos. There, the reenactment reaches its emotional climax as the Metropolitan lowers the body of Christ from the Cross and entrusts it to the Myrrh-bearing Women, who wrap it in a white shroud before carrying it with deep reverence back to the Church of Agios Minas, where it is placed for veneration. The tradition was established in 1977 by Father Stefanos Tsantiris and has been faithfully observed every year since, becoming one of the region’s most significant Easter customs.
