The custom of Palia-Poulia
In Argos Orestiko, Apokries (Carnival season) is more than just a time of celebration—it is a tradition filled with fire and symbolism. At its centre stands Palia-Poulia, an impressive tall, thorny cone constructed by the people of Argos Orestiko themselves, only to be set alight on the final day of Carnival. This fiery custom is believed to have deep roots in ancient fire worship and is linked to the Pleiades constellation (Poulia) and the celebrations associated with it. Today, it remains a vibrant part of the city’s festivities, creating a magical atmosphere that is best experienced in person.
