The lighting of the fires

Every December, the village squares come alive with large bonfires lit by the local communities, continuing an ancient tradition rich in symbolism. On the one hand, the fires are linked to Roman celebrations of the winter solstice, symbols of renewal and light; on the other, they echo Christian tradition and the shepherds’ fires that are said to have warmed the newborn Christ. Accompanied by singing, wine, and local delicacies, the custom reaches its peak on 23 December. In some villages, the fires are lit on different dates, but always within the festive period.
