Tranos Choros (Great Dance)
In Vlasti, both the Feast of the Assumption (August 15th) and the Feast of Saint Panteleimon are marked by the Tranos Choros, one of the region’s most significant cultural happenings. Set in the meadows of Vlasti—an emotionally charged place for the local community—locals and members of the diaspora form a large circle and, following a defined order, perform the dance without musical instruments, relying solely on the power of their voices, which merge with the movement itself. Participants are arranged by age and divided into two groups: one leads the traditional songs, while the other repeats the verses, creating a slow yet deeply imposing rhythm. The custom thus stands as a powerful expression of collective identity, cultural unity, and historical continuity, with its significance formally recognised in 2018 through its inscription in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
