Tsiri Varvara

Every year on 3 December, Amyntaio’s neighbourhoods are illuminated by dozens of large bonfires. This is Tsiri Varvara, one of the most distinctive Macedonian customs, where flames become a symbol of joy, warmth, and blessing. If you are here at this time, you will see locals building towering pyramids of wood and setting them alight. As the flames rise, the air fills with the traditional chant: “Tsiri-tsiri Varvara!”. A festive gathering unfolds around the fires, with warm bean soup, wine, tsipouro, and the sounds of brass bands carrying the celebration into the early hours. According to tradition, the flames drive away evil spirits and bring good fortune for the year ahead. Today, the custom continues to strengthen the bonds of the community, bringing residents and visitors together in a shared celebration of tradition.
