Church of the Archangel Michael in Aiani

The Church of the Archangel Michael awaits you just outside Aiani (approximately two kilometers away). This is a single-aisled post-Byzantine church which, despite suffering severe damage from the 1995 earthquake and being protected today by a modern shelter, still exudes the atmosphere of earlier times. The frescoes date to 1549 AD, according to the founder’s inscription, and were created at the expense of the local noble Stolis and his wife. A remarkable example of the religious art of its period, the church continues to bear witness to the region’s long and layered history.
