Church of the Archangel Michael in Aiani

The Church of the Archangel Michael awaits you just outside Aiani, approximately two kilometres away. Although this single-aisled post-Byzantine church suffered severe damage during the 1995 earthquake and is now protected by a modern protective structure, it continues to preserve the atmosphere of centuries past. Inside, you will admire the remarkable frescoes dating from 1549 AD, according to the founder’s inscription, which were created at the expense of the local noble Stolis and his wife. A fine example of post-Byzantine religious art, the church offers a unique glimpse into the region’s rich and layered history.
