Archaeological Museum of Aiani
The Archaeological Museum of Aiani is one of the most important archaeological museums in West Macedonia, presenting is the history of one of the most significant cities of ancient Macedonia. In six different halls, the museum houses the impressive finds brought to light by excavations in ancient Aiani and the Royal Necropolis. Your tour will begin in prehistoric times and reach the Roman period, offering a comprehensive picture of life in the ancient city. In Hall A, you learn about the historical identity of the city and see how its inhabitants lived in prehistoric times. In Hall B, impressive finds from the hill of Megali Rachi await you: objects from the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods, that reflect everyday life and prosperity of the ancient city. In Hall C, you will delve deeper into the lives of Aiani’s inhabitants. Everyday objects and elaborate artefacts provide insights into both public and private life. The tour continues in Hall D, where funerary finds from the Royal Necropolis at the Livadia site reveal burial practices, beliefs about the afterlife and attitudes towards death. In Hall E, you will encounter sculptures, funerary and votive steles, together with architectural members that highlight the artistic and aesthetic evolution of the city. The visit concludes in Hall F, where funerary finds from the wider area provide a broader understanding of Aiani’s archaeological wealth.
