Church of Agios Dimitrios in Gilofos

The parish church of Agios Dimitrios, in the village of Gilofos near Deskati, is a beautiful 18th-century stone church and a lasting landmark of the area’s spiritual life. Dedicated to Agios Dimitrios the Myrrh-streamer, it comes alive every year on 26 October, when his feast day is celebrated with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, a traditional fair, and a programme of cultural events that attracts large numbers of worshippers and visitors alike. Inside, the church is adorned with icons by the iconographer Vasileios Tsourchlis of Agios Georgios, Grevena. Among them, the depiction of Agios Georgios the New Martyr of Ioannina dressed in a fustanella is particularly striking, reflecting the artist’s remarkable attention to historical and cultural detail.
