Church of Agios Dimitrios in Siatista

In the Chora neighborhood of Siatista, stop at the Church of Agios Dimitrios, the central parish church and a living chronicle of the town. The original church, built in 1647, was replaced in 1801 by a larger one featuring a carved wooden iconostasis and rich frescoes. However, the second church was destroyed in the fire of 1910, and in its place the present church was erected in 1911. Built in a Byzantine style based on the designs of the Siatistan architect Aristotelis Zachos, it impresses with its presence and monumental scale. It was officially inaugurated in 1928. Right next to it stands the hexagonal bell tower, dating from 1856—twin to the one in Geraneia—which serves as a landmark of memory within Siatista.
