Church of Agios Dimitrios in Siatista
In Siatista, make a stop at the main parish church of the Chora district to discover the Church of Agios Dimitrios—a living chronicle of the town’s history. The original church, built in 1647, was replaced in 1801 by a larger one featuring a carved wooden iconostasis and rich frescoes. However, the second church was destroyed in the fire of 1910, and in its place the present church was erected in 1911. Designed in a Byzantine style by the Siatistan architect Aristotelis Zachos, it impresses with its presence and monumental scale. It was officially inaugurated in 1928. Right next to it stands the hexagonal bell tower of 1856—twin to the one in Geraneia— which remains a landmark of memory within the urban fabric.
