Episcopal Church of Sisani
Among the most prominent Middle Byzantine churches in Macedonia (11th–12th century), comparable in scale and significance to the Old Metropolitan Church of Veria and the Metropolitan Church of Serres, the Episcopal Church of Sisani is a landmark monument of its era. Originally built as a three-aisled domed basilica, it was rebuilt after its destruction by an earthquake in the 13th century as a cross-in-square church featuring an impressive marble floor inlay, a bishop’s throne, a pulpit, and frescoes. By the late 14th century, the church was abandoned as a result of the Ottoman conquest; however, its dedication to the Virgin Mary survives through its donor inscription. Today, following extensive conservation work on both its masonry and painted decoration, the monument stands restored, inviting visitors to discover its thousand-year history up close.
