Holy Monastery of Agios Ioannis Vazelonos
At the Holy Monastery of Agios Ioannis Vazelonos, you will discover a history that stretches back to the 3rd century AD. The original monastery was founded in 270 AD in Pontus, near Trabzon, and is considered one of the oldest Christian monasteries. Over the centuries, it experienced periods of both destruction and prosperity, while playing a significant role in the religious and cultural life of Pontic Hellenism. Following the events of 1922, the original monastery was permanently destroyed; however, its most precious legacy survived: the icon of Agios Ioannis Prodromos (Saint John the Forerunner). Saved by Archimandrite Dionysios Amarantidis, the icon was first transferred to Serres and later, in 1970, brought to Agios Dimitrios in Kozani, where the construction of a new monastery began. Completed in 1973, the new monastery continues the spiritual heritage of its predecessor and has since become an important centre of faith and culture for Pontians and visitors alike. If you visit on 24 June, you will experience the monastery’s annual feast day celebrations, featuring Vespers, the Divine Liturgy, and cultural events organised by local associations. From May to November, the monastery welcomes worshippers and visitors regularly, while during the winter months it can be visited only at designated times.
