A brief look at Nestorio’s long journey through time
From antiquity to the turbulent twentieth century, marked by war and migration this land has continuously written the pages of a history visible all around you—etched into stones, pathways, churches, and even the gazes of its people.
Human presence in the area dates back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, with findings at the Acropolis and at the site of “Lotsko” in Lower Nestorio attesting to significant settlements. The centuries that followed are shrouded mainly in myth and oral tradition, until the 10th century, when historical records once again shed light on the region’s past : the Bulgarians occupied the area, only to be driven out in 1028 by Emperor Basil II, known as the Bulgar Slayer. Following the Sack of Constantinople by the Crusaders in 1204, Nestorio became part of the Despotate of Epirus and, shortly thereafter, of the Empire of Nicaea. During the 14th century, then known as “Nestramio”, the settlement suffered repeated raids by Slavs, Albanians, and Turks. During the Ottoman period, under the name “Agios Nestoras”, Nestorio stands out for the independent spirit of its inhabitants.
The settlement’s present name was established after the Balkan Wars (1912–13), following its incorporation into the Greek state. The interwar years brought prosperity and development, but the Second World War left deep scars: in 1943, the village was burned twice by German occupation forces and many of its residents were executed. The Greek Civil War (1946–49) further accelerated depopulation, as poverty and insecurity forced many locals to emigrate. People originating from Nestorio settled in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Germany, while maintaining strong ties to their homeland. Despite the, hardships and upheavals of its past, Nestorio has never ceased to renew itself. Today, you will encounter a small yet vibrant community, where history becomes a source of inspiration and life moves forward with resilience, ready to write the next chapter of a remarkable story.
